First successful transplant was in 1954. One twin donated a kidney to his identical twin brother. He led a normal life after that, dying eight years later from causes unrelated to the transplant.
Anyone can be a donor.
Over 95,000 patients are currently waiting for an organ transplant, 10% are under age 18.
Donors are matched to recipients by a national computer registry.
All costs paid by the donor program.

Linda- I didn't know that the first successful transplant wasn't until 1954. I think your paper is going to be very informative and I am very excited to read it. Is there a way to look up how many people are registered donors in Colorado. Maybe it would be interesting to do a poll to see if people are donors, and if they aren't maybe ask why? It would be interesting to see the results and maybe even a great addition to your paper.
I think it is great to have an organ donor program. I can't imagine how hard it would be to have to wait for an organ just to stay alive while being on the verge of death. Hopefully someday, scientists will be able to engineer synthetic organs; this would end the long wait times and complications of traditional organ donations.
